The Machu Picchu by train tour does vary on departure time depending on the location of your hotel/hostel we aim to pick you up at 9.30 am, the exact time will be confirmed once your Cusco hostel/hotel has been confirmed to us.
This Machu Picchu by Train tour includes a fun hike up to Machu Picchu from Aguas Calientes. You’ll visit the incredible ruins of Machu Picchu.
You’ll have plenty of time to explore Machu Picchu and you will love learning about Machu Picchu and the Inka ways.
Your Machu Picchu by Train Tour starts as we pick you up from your hostel in Cusco around 9.30 a.m where you will be taken to Ollantaytambo in the Sacred Valley of the Incas by a shared minibus.
You will have a little time here to explore whilst you are waiting for your train to take you to Aguas Calientes.
The train leaves at 12.58 pm which takes around 2 hours to reach Aguas Calientes. The train is designed for travellers comfort with 4 seats facing each other. Machu Picchu train is equipped with panoramic windows, air conditioning and Andean music which helps create an Inka atmosphere.
Once you arrive your guide will be waiting to greet you and take you to your hostel for the night. Your guide will also explain the details to you about the Machu Picchu by train tour and prepare you for the next day.
The next morning you will start your trek to Machu Picchu, before leaving the hostel don’t forget to grab your breakfast box.
There are 2 ways to reach Machu Picchu. By bus or by walking.
If you would like to go up to Machupicchu by bus you must buy a bus ticket in Aguas Calientes the night before. The buses start leaving at 5:30 am from Aguas Calientes to Machupicchu. It takes 25 minutes to the main entrance of Machupicchu. Be at the bus station at least 30 minutes before the bus leaving time.
Walking up to Machupicchu takes 1 hour 30 minutes at a regular pace. Leave your hostel at 4:00 am in the morning from Aguas Calientes to the first checkpoint located right at the base of Machu Picchu which opens at 5:00. At this checkpoint, you must show your entrance ticket along with your passport. After the checkpoint, you can start to walk the 1850 Inka steps which take about 1 hour.
Once you arrive at the main entrance of Machu Picchu you will meet your tour guide again who will show you around Machu Picchu. You will also have plenty of time to explore.
After you have explored Machu Picchu, you can head back to walk back to Aguas Calientes to explore the small city at your own leisure. You must be at the train station at least 30 minutes before your train leaves the return train often changes its time slightly, so it is better to be early and safe than sorry.
Then the train will then start its 2-hour journey back to Ollantaytambo where there will be a bus waiting for you.
If you are thinking to do the extra hiking options in Machupicchu like climbing Machu Picchu monataña o Huayna Picchu mountain is better to spend an extra night in Aguas Calientes. You need at least 8/9 hours to explore the whole Machu Picchu site.

In Ollantaytambo, once you exit the train station the return bus will call out your name and take you back to Cusco dropping you off near the Plaza de Armas.
Machu Picchu is high on everyones bucket list and now I have a grinning ticket next to mine.

Is was nice hiking up to Machu Pichu, after taking the train I decided it would be good to hike the Inca steps and boy does it make Machu Picchu feel more rewarding.
